What to Expect

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points in order to regulate metabolism, body, defense, Qi and blood.

How does acupuncture work?

Traditional acupuncture is based on activating the flow of Qi (Energy) through distinct meridians or pathways throughout the body. Acupuncture encourages Qi to flow to areas where it is Deficient (cool) and away from where it is Excessive (hot) to create a balanced system.

Does acupuncture hurt?

In Chinese, acupuncture is “bu tong”, which means painless. But this does not mean that you will not feel it. Patients feel different sensations such as pressure, cramping, heaviness, achiness, tingling or an electric sensation. In any case, if you experience any discomfort, it is usually mild and reduces as that treatment continues.

How deep do the needles go?

The nature of each acupuncture treatment determines the location and the depth of each needle’s insertion. Usually, needles are inserted from 1/4 to 1 inch in depth.

How will I know if acupuncture helps?

Patients often experience significant results immediately or shortly after a treatment, however, others may only notice that pain or stress is diminished over the next couple of days. Severity of conditions affects recovery time.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The nature of your complaint and your body’s reaction to the therapy will help determine the duration of your treatment. You many only need a single treatment, small number of treatments (1-5), or a series of treatments called a course (10 to 15) many be needed to resolve more complex problems. Some chronic problems and degenerative conditions may require multiple treatments over time. In general, a patient should notice some substantial improvement in 5 or 6 sessions.

What should I do before an acupuncture treatment?

A detailed patient history will help determine your specific acupuncture protocols and therapies. Please download, complete and bring all appropriate new patient forms contained on this website to your first appointment. Avoid treatment when excessively fatigued, hungry, overly full, emotionally upset or shortly after sex.

What should I wear to an acupuncture treatment?

Wear loose clothing or be prepared to change into a treatment gown that opens in the back. Remove jewelry and do not take any non-essential items to your appointment.
